When technology pisses me off (2)

A Buzz Lightyear DVD this time. My son Patrick has Asperger's Syndrome. He likes to watch the same film over and over again. He likes to watch the film over and over again. Not the adverts. Going to the cinema is not like watching a DVD at home. DVD's that won't let you skip the adverts when you're watching the DVD for the umpteenth time are RUBBISH

  1. Hi Jon,

I couldn't agree more. I remember reading about DVDs when they came out; about how the disc manufacturers had the ability to force you to watch portions of the disc, but that they'd signed up to some "code of conduct" which said that they would only use it for mandatory copyright and legal notices. How long did that last? About a week, I think.

  2. Hello again,

Your post prompted me to finish something that's been brewing in my drafts for quite some time now. I'm sure that you've got better things to read/do, but just in case you haven't...

  3. Hi Jon,

I forgot to mention Disney's FastPlay, which is marketed as if it solves your problem ("Just slide the disc in, and it starts to play...automatically!") but if you read the small print, rather than letting you just insert the disc and have the movie play, you insert the disc and have the trailers and then the movie play. Which is fine so long as you want [your child] to sit through all the Disney marketing, er, I mean, trailers...

  4. A better name would be Disney Delayed Play.

  5. Rip the DVD and burn just the vobs for the main film to a new disk. It will then autoplay when inserted into the DVD player, also you can keep the precious fragile original disk locked in a cupboard and burn new copies as reaquired (my kids are very hard on dvd's)
